Reference Risk category Risk Description Context Impact Probability Mitigation Product Safety Instruction Required
Physical Product causes harm to health when handled Product may be heavy; product may have some sharp edges; product may contain materials harmful to health Low Low No products weigh more than 20kg, nevertheless appropriate manual handling techniques should be applied.  Appropriate PPE should be worn during handling prior to installation.  Product does not contain any materials/chemicals harmful to health – manufacturer requires appropriate declarations (e.g. REACH) by suppliers No
Physical Product causes harm to health during fitting Product may be heavy; product may have some sharp edges; product may contain materials harmful to health Low Low No products weigh more than 20kg, nevertheless sensible manual handling processes should be followed.  Appropriate PPE should be worn during installation.  Installation should not take place unless appropriate safety precautions are taken, e.g. vehicle properly secured.  Product does not contain any materials harmful to health – manufacturer requires appropriate declarations (e.g. REACH) by suppliers No
Physical Product causes harm to health during normal use Vehicle exhaust fumes can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract and are a risk to health by breathing in.  Exposure to exhaust fumes in confined spaces is harmful Medium Low Vehicles should not be run indoors without appropriate ventilation.  Exhaust leaks during normal outdoor use are not likely to reach harmful concentrations.  If an exhaust leak is suspected the vehicle should be inspected by a competent professional No
Physical Product causes harm to health due to deterioration/failure caused by exposure to abnormal conditions or external contaminants Abnormal driving conditions such as extreme temperatures or difficult terrain or exposure to contaminants may cause premature ageing and/or damage, resulting in loss of performance of the product Medium Low Mandatory periodic vehicle inspection will identify faults/defects. Issues identified by vehicle users should be reported to a competent person/professional, with repairs carried out as required No
Physical Product becomes hot during use Vehicle exhaust systems become hot as gases pass through them Low Low Products should be fitted by competent people/professionals using appropriate PPE and tools.  Vehicle exhaust systems should not be allowed to cool before being touched No
Physical / Environmental / Lifespan Product is incorrectly fitted, impacting on physical and environmental performance and lifespan Incorrectly fitted products can inhibit performance and may have consequential impacts on lifespan and health Low Low Products should be fitted by competent people/professionals using appropriate PPE and tools.  Guidance materials made available via www.bmcatalysts.com No
Consumer characteristics Product causes harm to consumers with particular characteristics Risk of harm may be different for different characteristics including but not limited to children, older people, persons with disabilities.  Gender differences may impact risk profile Low Low No additional/specific risks identified.  Product should be installed by a competent person/professional, using appropriate PPE and tools No
Environmental Product causes a risk to the environment Vehicle exhaust emissions are damaging to the environment.  Untreated emissions are particularly damaging Medium Low Emissions control products are designed to mitigate environmental risk.  Products that do not impact on emissions, e.g. connecting pipes, do not create additional risk to consumers. Mandatory periodic vehicle inspections should identify issues with emissions control products No
Lifespan Product has a pre-determined lifespan, which once expired creates additional risk in any category Restricted performance or physical degradation may cause harm to health Medium Low Products do not have a pre-determined lifespan & will continue to perform as intended assuming the vehicle is operating correctly. Products that have been subject to adverse conditions and have therefore failed should be replaced by a competent person/professional No
Interconnections and interrelations Product contributes to the failure of vehicle powertrain system Product contains defects that cause consequential damage/safety defects to the vehicle to which it is fitted Low Low Products do not cause consequential damage/defects when correctly installed on vehicles operating as intended No
Cybersecurity Product causes risk to cybersecurity Modern vehicles can be subject to cybersecurity risk Low Low Manufactured products do not contain means of electronic interface with vehicle systems.  BM Catalysts are not responsible for sensors that connect to BM products No
